Stressful Food Chatter: How to Deal

Food chatter are the thoughts that loop around and around in our mind when we stop overeating.⁣

They’re distracting and annoying. They’re anxious, insistent and bossy. ⁣

They can make us feel 𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘻𝘺. ⁣

But they don’t mean that we are crazy. Or that anything is even wrong.⁣

Food chatter is the product of an habituated brain. When we change our habit - the brain has some catching up to do. In the meantime, we’re left with the world’s most irritating AM-radio station crackling through our minds all day.⁣

Once again, we draw on the principles of emotional sobriety: It’s not the chatter that harms or hurts us - It’s our response to it. If we respond with fear and loathing, those thoughts will remain obsessive (and ultimately drive us back to overeating). ⁣

What if we allowed food chatter to take up some space for a little while? What if we gave it permission - allowed it to be there? What if we accepted food chatter as part of the journey?⁣

Acceptance in this case is not a behavior - it’s not the act of complying with them. 𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘰-𝘦𝘹𝘪𝘴𝘵 𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶.⁣

Notice how you normally feel about those thoughts (clenched, agitated, squirmy?). Now - PAUSE and choose to accept them (relax, release). Welcome them in. Stay true to your ideal eating. ⁣

Are you willing to try?⁣
