Anxiety. For most of us, it's at the root of overeating. But not in the way you might think.
I'm not talking about anxiety about life (which we may or may not have). I'm talking about an anxious mental state when it comes to healthy eating and exercise that prevents us from being able to achieve our goals.
For example, we might call the experience of a sugar craving intolerable. But what if it’s not the discomfort of the craving - It’s the discomfort of the anxiety we feel ABOUT the craving that makes it so intolerable, so miserable? What if the craving isn’t really THAT horrific – but instead, it’s the monkey mind panicking about discomfort?
Think about it.
Almost all of us have had those few times in our life where it felt like the obsession was lifted and we “got it”, right? Those magical few weeks or months where we could follow a program and lose the weight and we felt like we were in right relationship with food without struggle. Or, we were going through a highly emotional situation – whether it was wonderful like falling in love, or terrible like loss or heartbreak – and, we just didn’t feel like eating.
These were times where the anxiety about food wasn’t present. It just…wasn’t. Either other emotions were stronger, or without realizing it we put ourselves into a completely calm state of mind around food. We were in a state of mental relaxation with food.
When you stay in a relaxed mental state as you implement a healthy eating and exercise plan – this is when it feels like “flow”. And, you can create that for yourself. You don’t have to wait for it to happen to you.
I believe that this is the heart of the stop overeating journey in sobriety. It’s the call to increase serenity and to take care of the mind.
